Common Questions

Questions? We have answers.

We know taking the first step can feel overwhelming. Here's everything you need to know about therapy at Acquah Counseling.

Getting Started
Is seeking therapy a sign of weakness?+
Not at all. Asking for help takes courage and self-awareness. In fact, recognizing when you need support is one of the strongest things you can do. In our work together, we'll help you identify your strengths and use them to reduce the impact of the challenges you're facing.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?+
If you're struggling with emotions, relationships, stress, or simply feeling stuck — therapy can help. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit. Many people find therapy valuable for personal growth, clarity, and building coping skills even when life feels manageable.
What happens in the first session?+
Your first session is all about getting to know you. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, your background, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. There's no pressure — you share only what you're comfortable with. Together, you'll start to identify goals and a direction for your work together.
How do I choose the right therapist?+
The therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in therapy's success. We offer a free consultation so you can get a sense of fit before committing. If you're unsure which of our therapists is right for you, contact us and we'll help match you based on your needs, preferences, and availability.
Practical Details
Do you offer in-person and virtual sessions?+
Yes — we offer both in-person sessions at our Ajax, Ontario office and virtual sessions (video or phone) for clients across Ontario. Appointments are available on select weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays. Book online anytime through Jane App.
How much do sessions cost?+
Session fees range from $150–$240 depending on the type of therapy. Individual, child, and teen therapy starts at $150 per 60-minute session. Couples therapy starts at $190, and family therapy (90 minutes) starts at $220. Fees are discussed in your initial consultation.
Is therapy covered by my insurance?+
Many health insurance and employee benefit plans cover psychotherapy fully or in part. We offer direct billing to most major providers so you don't have to pay upfront. Contact us before your first session and we'll help you verify your coverage.
What is your cancellation policy?+
Please cancel at least 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged for the full session fee. We understand that life happens — if you have an emergency or extenuating circumstances, please reach out and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
Where are you located?+
Our office is located at 190 Harwood Ave. South, Ajax, Ontario, in the Durham Region. We also serve clients virtually across all of Ontario — so no matter where you are in the province, we can support you.

We offer appointments on select weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays to accommodate different schedules. You can book online 24/7 through our Jane App booking page and choose a time that works for you.
About Therapy
Is what I share in therapy confidential?+
Yes. Everything you share in therapy is confidential. There are a small number of legal exceptions — for example, if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if a court order requires disclosure — but these are rare. Your therapist will explain the limits of confidentiality in your first session.
How long will therapy take?+
Everyone's journey is unique. The length of therapy depends on your goals, your commitment, and the nature of what brought you in. Some people find resolution in a handful of sessions; others benefit from longer-term support. We'll work together to find a pace and duration that feels right for you.
What therapeutic approaches do you use?+
Our therapists draw from a range of evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Narrative Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based techniques, and faith-based counseling. Your therapist will tailor the approach to your specific needs.
Do you offer Christian counseling?+
Yes. For clients who find meaning and support in their faith, we offer counseling that integrates Christian values and perspectives. This is always client-led — we follow your lead on how much faith plays a role in your sessions.
Do you work with children and teenagers?+
Yes. We work with children, teens (from age 13+), and their families. Our therapists create a safe, age-appropriate environment where young people can express themselves freely. For younger children, parents may be involved in sessions; for teens, we prioritize their autonomy while keeping families appropriately informed.
